President Donald Trump’s second term has been marked with actions that effectively dismissed thousands of workers and diminished government services and support. Just as integral to the president’s agenda is a Republican-majority Congress that controls the purse strings and the fate of some agencies. Several of the administration's actions are being replicated in states with Republican majorities, while Democratic attorneys general are pushing back in the courts.  As federal funding and systems dwindle, states are left to figure out how and whether to make up the difference.

How states are navigating cuts to NIH

Amid the federal fallout, a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in August allowed the Trump administration to cancel hundreds of millions of dollars in National Institutes of Health grants that addressed diversity, equity and inclusion issues.
