A U.S. Supreme Court ruling in August allowed the Trump administration to cancel hundreds of millions of dollars in National Institutes of Health grants that addressed diversity, equity and inclusion issues. Those cuts will be felt across states and across research topics — from studying the long-term effects of COVID-19 and vaccine hesitancy in rural communities to bisexual adolescents’ and young adults’ risk for depression and suicidal ideation. Also at risk are efforts to increase diversity in scientific fields. The move comes amid a larger agenda of curtailing government services and support.
