Licensing board member faces disciplinary charges from a separate board
An eastern Iowa physician who is a member of a state licensing board is now facing licensing-board charges herself.
The Iowa Board of Medicine has charged Dr. Mona S. Alqulali, a Clinton County medical doctor specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, with improper prescribing and improper management of medical records.
As is customary with Iowa’s licensing boards, the Board of Medicine has disclosed no information as to the incidents and circumstances that gave rise to the charges, when they allegedly occurred, or where they allegedly took place.
State records indicate that Alqulali is currently a member of the Iowa Board of Physician Assistants, having begun her service with the board in July 2022. Her term on the board ends April 30, 2026. The board, which is responsible for the licensing and oversight of physician assistants, is composed of five physician assistants, two physicians and two members of the public.
According to state records, Alqulali has worked in family medicine, is a member of Infinity Medical Group and Med Spa, and has maintained surgical privileges at Mercy One-North hospital in Clinton.
A hearing on the disciplinary charges is scheduled for Aug. 14, 2026.
Lawsuit alleged workplace injury
In an unrelated case, Alqulali was sued in 2023 by Karla Anderson, who alleged she was injured by Alqulali while attempting to assist with a Caesarian section delivery of a baby. In her lawsuit, Anderson alleged that on Sept. 2, 2021, in a Mercy One-North operating room, Alqulali “swung an overhead surgical light” in her direction “in a sudden, violent manner,” causing the light to strike Anderson in the back of the head.
Anderson alleged she sustained “severe and permanent” injuries as a result of the mishap. Alqulali and the hospital alleged Anderson was at least partially to blame for the incident. The lawsuit was dropped in 2024 with no mention of any out-of-court settlement that may have been reached.
Calls to Alqulali’s Clinton office were not immediately returned Wednesday.
