Voting Rights

The Supreme Court’s decision to gut the federal Voting Rights Act has upended American politics and triggered a new rush to redraw congressional districts. The case, Louisiana v. Callais, holds sweeping consequences for how states and local governments draw district lines at all levels of government. For decades, the Voting Rights Act helped protect majority-minority districts from gerrymandering and ensure voters could elect Black candidates in the South. But observers say the court’s decision opens the door to significantly disenfranchise minority voters.
