Montana governor seeks applications for Flathead district judge

When ballots are tallied in November, there will be a vacancy in the Flathead County District Court.

Two current district court judges — Judge Amy Eddy and Judge Dan Wilson — are facing off in a race for an open Montana Supreme Court seat to replace retiring Justice Beth Baker.

Given that either candidate winning will leave an opening at the district court level, Gov. Greg Gianforte announced Tuesday his office is accepting applications and nominations of lawyers in good standing who are qualified to fill a district court judgeship for the remainder of the respective judge’s term.

The application form is available electronically at nominatejudges.mt.gov. Applications must be submitted electronically as well as in hard copy by Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026, by 5 p.m. Applications will be made available to the public.

Commencing Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026, and continuing through Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, the public will be given the opportunity to provide letters of support or other comments regarding the applicants at nominatejudges.mt.gov. Applicants must receive at least three letters of support to be considered for appointment by the governor.
