Republican NC Senator from the Outer Banks resigns

Bobby Hanig of Currituck County resigned from the NC Senate Monday, ending a legislative career that began with his election to the House in 2018. 

Hanig was appointed to the Senate in 2022. He decided not to seek reelection this year and ran instead for a seat in Congress. He came in third in the five-way Republican primary in the 1st Congressional District. 

Before his election to the House, Hanig served on the Currituck Board of Commissioners.

In a Facebook post, Hanig did not say why he resigned. The legislature is unlikely to hold another session before the midterm elections. 

In the Facebook post, Hanig thanked his family, friends, supporters, and legislative colleagues. 

“Last but certainly not least I want to thank my constituents for allowing me the honor and privilege to serve northeast North Carolina and this great state,” Hanig wrote.

“Together WE have accomplished many great things over the last 10 years, and I will forever cherish the opportunity!

“I can assure you that, even though I am stepping down from my official capacity, I will continue fighting for eastern North Carolina values, beliefs,and our heritage

I know that God will continue to bless this great state and the greatest country in the world!”

Hanig challenged Senate Republican leadership on high profile issues. He opposed a shrimp trawling ban that the Senate passed with a healthy majority last year, but which the House killed. 

This year, he was one of two Republicans who voted against the state budget because it includes ferry tolls, NC Newsline reported. Senate District 1 covers 10 counties on the Outer Banks and northeastern North Carolina.

A Republican selection committee from Hanig’s Senate district will select his replacement. Gov. Josh Stein will appoint the person the committee selects.
