Luxury Rentals, Bill 9 And Public Water: Maui County Council, Wailuku-Waiheʻe-Waikapū District

Incumbent council member Alice Lee's decision to step down from the Maui County Council seat representing the Wailuku-Waiheʻe-Waikapū District has drawn five candidates to the ballot for the Aug. 8 primary.

The top two finishers will advance to the general election in November.

Maui County Council races are particularly competitive this election cycle and have the potential to tilt the balance of power at the local level toward a more progressive agenda.

All five aspiring council members are running in the primary as nonpartisans. They filled out a survey from Civil Beat, outlining their views on a range of issues, which include food self-sufficiency, the plan to move more of Maui’s water supply into public hands and how Maui County can get out in front of climate change.
