Gov. Patrick Morrisey has signed legislation that cuts the state’s income tax by 5%.

“West Virginians sent us to tackle real problems and deliver real results,” Morrisey said in a statement Tuesday. “By securing this 5%t income tax cut, we are returning money to the people who earned it and ensuring our state remains the most competitive place in the region to live, work, and raise a family.”

Morrisey asked for a 10% income tax during his State of the State address, but his proposed budget included only a 5% cut. He asked lawmakers to work with him to find the additional revenue needed for a 10% cut.

Lawmakers approved the 5% cut on the last night of the 60-day legislative session. A 5% tax cut will cost the state an estimated $125 million in revenue.

The tax cut will benefit the state’s wealthiest families, while a middle-income household would see just $1 per week from the proposed tax cut, according to the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy.

The tax cut will impact the 2026 tax year.
