State Sen. Mallory McMorrow kept gaining momentum over the weekend following a new positive poll, which showed the Royal Oak Democrat ahead with some primary voters, by netting the endorsement of one of the most powerful legislators currently serving in Michigan: State Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks.

McMorrow shows signs of growing strength in U.S. Senate primary with new polling

Brinks gave McMorrow’s campaign a nod of support over the weekend at Brewery Vivant in Grand Rapids, Brinks’ home turf. McMorrow is a leader in the state Senate as well, serving as the majority whip. The endorsement came at the event, which gathered more than 200 community leaders and supporters of McMorrow’s campaign.

“The thing I hear most is ‘I love Mallory McMorrow because I can see that she cares about me, she can relate to me,’” Brinks said at the event. “So, that is the thing that I think we need most in … Washington DC. Somebody who understands that and who can get things done, and to do it because they know every single person in our community deserves representation from somebody who cares about them and values them.”

McMorrow said that what Michigan has been able to accomplish with Brinks’ leadership in the state Senate would “make Washington blush.”

“None of that would be possible without the stoic, fierce, and never-to-be-underestimated leadership of Winnie Brinks,” McMorrow said. “We are allowed to feel hope and joy and optimism. And I feel that in the room today.”

Brinks is the highest ranking Democratic official in Michigan to endorse in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate.

Also in the race are U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Birmingham) and former Detroit health official Abdul El-Sayed.

On the Republican side of the race are former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-White Lake) and former Michigan Republican Party Co-Chair Bernadette Smith.
