Hines wins Dem nomination in 10th Congressional District primary, will face Bouchard

The match up for November in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District is all but set, as U.S. Army Captain Michael Bouchard Jr. and attorney Christina Hines secured their respective party’s nominations in Tuesday’s primary election.

With U.S. Rep. John James (R-Shelby Township), opting against reelection to pursue the governor’s office, the 10th Congressional District is up for grabs, with a healthy field of Democrats and Republicans each vying to represent their party in the general election.

In the Democratic primary Hines faced former Pontiac Mayor Tim Greimel and former Department of Commerce Attorney Eric Chung.

The Associated Press called the race for Hines at 12;09 a.m. Wednesday. Unofficial results show Hines with 45.3% of the vote, while Chung received 31.4% and Greimel received 23.3% with 54% of votes counted.

“Tonight belongs to every volunteer who knocked on doors after work, every supporter who made phone calls, and every voter who believed we could build a better future together. I’m deeply honored and I’m ready to fight for our community in Congress,” Hines said in a statement released after her win was announced. “Working families across this district deserve a representative who will finally put them first. That’s what I have spent my career doing as a prosecutor – protecting this community, standing up for victims and holding bad actors accountable.”

In a statement released after the race was called, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel said Hines was exactly the leader the party needs to flip the Republican seat. 

“Christina has spent her career fighting for justice and for the people too often left behind by the system,” Hertel said. “She built her career as a prosecutor handling some of the state’s toughest cases and serving as an advocate for survivors of sexual assault and abuse. As a working mom raising three kids in Macomb County, she knows firsthand the pressures facing Michigan families — and she’s running for Congress to fight for them.”

On the Republican ballot was Bouchard, Army veteran and construction manager Steffan Demetropoulos, and attorney Justin Kirk. While former prosecutor Robert Lulgjuraj was also on the ballot, Lulgjuraj suspended his campaign on July 14, following President Donald Trump’s endorsement of Bouchard.

The Associated Press called the race for Bouchard at 9:17 p.m.. Unofficial results at 9:35 show Bouchard with 73.2% of the vote, Kirk with 17.3% and Demetropoulos with 3.7% with 18% of the total vote counted. 

Looking towards November, Republicans hold the advantage in the 10th District, with the nonpartisan Cook Political Report giving it a “lean Republican” rating. However, Democrats still consider the seat a key target, with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the campaign arm for U.S. House Democrats, listing it as among their districts in play for 2026. 

The district covers southern Macomb County and parts of eastern Oakland County.
