Haley Stevens continues to net U.S. Senate endorsements, this time from Delaware’s Chris Coons

Following her pickup of an endorsement from former Michigan U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens earned another nod from a sitting member of Congress’ upper chamber, this time from Democratic Delaware U.S. Senator Chris Coons.

Coons, who has a background in manufacturing, praised Stevens (D-Birmingham) for her work with former President Barack Obama on the late-2000s automotive rescue plan. He also cited his belief that Stevens would be the best candidate positioned to take on and win against the leading Republican candidate, former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers of White Lake.

“Haley Stevens is exactly the kind of leader Democrats need in the U.S. Senate right now, and she’s the best candidate to keep this seat blue and help us flip the Senate,” Coons said in a statement circulated by Stevens’ campaign. “Haley has spent her career standing up for working families, protecting Michigan jobs, and taking on the fights that matter most. Haley Stevens is Michigan’s best chance at winning against Mike Rogers in the fall and keeping the seat blue.”

Stevens said she was honored to have Coons’ support.

“Senator Coons knows how to get things done–he’s an effective leader, and I look forward to working with him in the Senate to stand up to Trump’s chaos, fight to lower costs, and make sure every working family can get ahead,” Stevens said in a statement.

Coons is the third U.S. senator to endorse Stevens, following previous endorsements from Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada) and Ruben Gallego (D-Arizona).

Michigan State Sen. Mallory McMorrow of Royal Oak and former Wayne County health official Abdul El-Sayed are also seeking the Democratic nomination for the open U.S. Senate seat from the retirement of U.S. Sen. Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Township).

Rogers has just one primary challenge in former Michigan Republican Party co-chair Bernadette Smith.
