A Williston police officer shot and injured a man early Thursday, according to officials.
The man who was shot was reported to be in stable condition at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, the Williston Police Department said in a press release around 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
The officer involved in the shooting was also taken to the medical center, where he was treated for injuries and released, the press release said. Details regarding the officer’s injuries were not immediately available.
Authorities released few details Thursday morning about the circumstances of the shooting. The person who was shot and the Williston police officer have not yet been named publicly.
State police protocol is to withhold the name of an officer involved in a shooting for 24 hours. Williston police said the officer has been put on paid administrative leave.
State police, who are leading the investigation, said in a press release around 8:30 a.m. Thursday that the name of the person who was shot would be released after further investigation and notification of relatives.
The shooting, according to Williston police, took place after officers were dispatched around 4:40 a.m. to St. George Road, also known as Route 2A, in the area between Butternut Road and Old Creamery Road for a “roadway hazard.”
“During this incident, a Williston Police officer discharged his firearm striking an individual,” the release added.
State police said the investigation is in its “earliest stages” involving state police detectives and the state police major crime unit.
