Sullivan wins Oklahoma Republican insurance commissioner primary

OKLAHOMA CITY — Republican voters Tuesday selected their nominee to become the state’s next insurance commissioner.

Bob Sullivan defeated Marty Quinn to advance to the General Election in November. Sullivan will face Democrat Craig MacIntyre in November.

Sullivan, 41, said Tuesday night that he’s “very grateful” to Oklahoma voters and humbled that the won the nomination.

“It’s a humbling experience,” he said. “For a first timer to be successful means the world to me. We’re thrilled.”

Sullivan, of Inola, said Oklahoma’s high property insurance premiums prompted him to run for office. 

A recent analysis found that Oklahomans pay the highest rate in the nation, at an average of $5,533 per year.

Sullivan, who works in the insurance industry, has promised to address the state’s soaring property insurance rates by using a new law that takes effect in July. It requires insurers to submit notice of proposed rate increases before they take effect.

Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready is finishing his final term due to term limits.
