Moss secures Democratic nomination in Michigan’s 11th Congressional District

State Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Bloomfield) has emerged victorious in a four-person race which will more than likely determine who will fill U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens’ empty congressional seat come 2027. 

The Associated Press called the race for Moss at 9:31. Unofficial results show Moss receiving 49.2% of the vote with 67% of the total vote counted.

Attorney Aisha Farooqi received 33%, Waterford School District Board of Education Vice President John Paul Torres received 9.6% and former Ford Engineer Don Ufford received 8.2 %.

As a safe blue seat, the Democratic nominee is likely to prevail in Michigan’s 11th Congressional District. Troy Mayor Ethan Baker was the sole Republican candidate on the ballot, and will face Moss in November’s general election. 

Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel congratulated Moss won on the win.

“Jeremy has fought for working families in the Michigan Legislature, and he will continue that fight in the halls of Congress. His commitment to lowering healthcare costs, tacking the cost of living crisis, and protecting our rights is as critical as ever,” Hertel said in a statement. “I’d like to thank each of the candidates in this Democratic primary for fostering a competitive and substantive race — primaries make our party stronger. As we look to November, I look forward to coming together to elect Jeremy Moss to Congress.”

A state lawmaker first elected to the state Legislature in 2015, Moss is the first openly gay member of the Michigan Senate and its only Jewish state senator. If he prevails in November, Moss could also be the state’s first openly LGBTQ+ representative.

As of July 15, Moss’ campaign has raised $1.49 million, with $352,516 in cash on hand. Baker, in contrast, raised $141,876 and has just over $121,000 in cash on hand heading into November.
