DeSantis directs Capitol and Brevard County flags lowered for Bill Posey

Gov. Ron DeSantis has directed flags at the Capitol, Brevard County Courthouse, and Palm Bay City Hall to fly at half staff on Saturday in honor of former U.S. Rep. Bill Posey.

Posey died at age 78 last month.

Before his election to Congress, he served in both chambers of the Florida Legislature, eight years in each.

Posey, a Republican, served in Congress for 16 years.

“Former Representative Posey lived an honorable life of service and always displayed his unwavering dedication to the citizens of Florida. Our prayers go out to his family,” DeSantis wrote Friday in his directive.

Republicans in Congress file suit to end mask mandate for air travel

Posey was among a group of representatives who filed suit against the CDC during COVID, asking for an end to mandates for face masks for air travel. They filed in federal court in Western Kentucky, but case was mooted when a judge in Florida invalidated the rule.

Following Posey’s death, U.S. Rep. Mike Haridopolos, a Republican, posted a tribute to the former representative.

“Throughout his career, he earned a reputation as a principled conservative, a steadfast advocate for fiscal responsibility and government transparency, and a tireless supporter of America’s space program and the communities he proudly represented along Florida’s Space Coast,” Haridopolos wrote.

Posey was cofounder of the Congressional Estuary Caucus.
