Trinity Health layoffs expose the danger of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act

Recently, Trinity Health in Livonia, Michigan announced a mass layoff of 557 workers, citing federal cuts to Medicare and Medicaid as a direct catalyst for their decision. These devastating cuts are the result of congressional Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). The law makes historic cuts to Medicaid over the next decade, leaving states with fewer federal resources and providers facing greater uncompensated care costs as millions of Americans are at risk of losing health coverage.

In Michigan, the OBBBA has already left 23 healthcare providers at risk, forcing them to cut services, prepare for closure, or shutter operations entirely. But despite this mounting crisis, U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers (R-White Lake) continues to praise the destructive legislation. Rogers claimed the OBBBA would protect Medicaid, but nonpartisan estimates tell a much darker story: between 171,000 and 355,000 Michiganders are projected to lose coverage thanks to the bill.

What’s more, Michigan’s Medicaid budget is set to drop by $1 billion by 2028 and plummet by a total of $10.8 billion by 2034. With over 221,000 Michigan residents already stripped of Medicaid, CHIP, or ACA coverage since the OBBBA’s passage, Rogers’ enthusiastic support for these cuts proves just how out of touch he is with his would-be constituents.

Rogers’ celebration of the OBBBA aligns with his record. During his previous tenure in Congress, he voted 14 times to weaken Medicaid between 2003 and 2015. Just last year, he explicitly stated he would have voted to pass the OBBBA. Throughout his political career, Rogers has demonstrated a clear and consistent disregard for healthcare access in Michigan—and becoming a senator will not change his stance.

He isn’t alone. In fact, every member of Michigan’s Republican congressional delegation voted to pass the OBBBA, celebrating the policy as it moved forward. Rep. Tom Barrett (MI-07) declared he was “proud” to send the bill to the president’s desk; Rep. Bill Huizenga (MI-04) called it a “massive win;” and Rep. John James (MI-10) echoed the praise. Each of their votes represents a direct strike against the health and well-being of the communities these officials were elected to represent.

The recent layoffs at Trinity Health are not an isolated incident; they are the predictable consequence of a dangerous legislative agenda. Mike Rogers and Michigan’s congressional Republicans have made their priorities clear—and their enthusiastic support for the OBBBA and its cuts to healthcare funding represent a direct threat to a healthy Michigan.
