The special election to fill the Maine House of Representatives seat held by Kathy Javner, who died of cancer on Jan. 10, has been set for June 9, the same day as the primary election, the Secretary of State’s office announced Thursday.

Javner, a Republican, represented House District 29, which covers Millinocket and northern Penobscot County.

The Republican and Democratic parties will now caucus to choose candidates for that seat. Nominations are due to the Office of the Secretary of State by March 6. Independent candidates must collect 50-80 signatures from registered voters in the district and submit them to the municipal clerks for verification before delivering them to the Secretary of State by March 6.

The candidate chosen by voters on June 9 will represent District 29 for the remainder of the two-year term in the Maine House.
