Parental rights bill passes Alabama Senate

A bill related to parental rights passed the Alabama Senate Wednesday.
HB 6, sponsored by Rep. Kenneth Paschal, R-Pelham, would prevent the government from overriding a parents’ choice of “education, upbringing, care, and control of their child unless the government demonstrates that the application of the burden is narrowly tailored to a compelling state interest and the government uses the least restrictive means possible to further that interest.”
“This bill does nothing except codify parental rights as being fundamental,” said Sen. Greg Albritton, R-Atmore, on the floor.
The bill passed 35-0.
The House amended the bill to say that it only applies to disputes between the government and parents and not between parents.
The bill goes to Gov. Kay Ivey.
