Nungesser easily wins third term as lieutenant governor
The decision of Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser earlier this year not to run for Louisiana governor surprised many in state political circles, but he earned a predictable, convincing re-election victory Saturday against a weak field.
Nungesser, a Republican and former Plaquemines Parish president, will avoid a runoff next month with nearly 70% of the vote as of 8:30 p.m. and the Associated Press projecting he will maintain that substantial lead. Any candidate who earns 50% of the popular vote in Louisiana’s open primary wins the election outright.
Willie Jones, the sole Democrat in the race, was the only other candidate to draw double-digit support with 18%, followed by Republicans Elbert Guillory (6%) and Tami Hotard (5%), independent Bruce Payton (2%) and unaffiliated Gary Rispone (1%).
