One of the most successful public economic development projects in modern American history is North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park. Nearly 70 years ago, when a collection of public officials, academics and business leaders unveiled their vision for RTP, the undeveloped region found between the towns of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill was characterized as one dominated by possums and pines.

Today, as is documented in the new book by the late writer Allen Paul and his son, Raleigh-based lawyer and civic leader Mack Paul – “Miracle Road: The Story of Research Triangle Park” — RTP is home to more than 350 companies and 65,000 workers. What’s more, it has been the font of scientific discoveries that have changed medicine, agriculture, computing, and everyday life around the world.

Recently, to learn more about the book, the remarkable story it tells and why he and his late father took on the project, Newsline caught up with Mack Paul for an extended conversation.
