Louisiana upgrades its driver’s license system. Governor says it will cut wait times.

Louisiana has upgraded its technology for issuing driver’s licenses, an improvement that Gov. Jeff Landry says will make it much faster to get a license or identification card.

“We came into office with a promise to fix it and we did,” Landry said in a video his communications office released Tuesday. 

The state Office of Motor Vehicles replaced its decades-old system with a platform from CHAMP Titles Inc., a Cleveland, Ohio-based company. OMV locations were closed statewide last week to give the agency time to switch to the new system.

Landry said the new software is going to “cut hours off of getting your driver’s license.”

“We promised we were going to make getting a driver’s license kind of like going to Disney World and we are instituting it right here,” Landry said in a social media video.

For several years, leadership at the Office of Motor Vehicles has blamed its poor performance, long wait times and frequent outages on its outdated computer system. The state’s contract with CHAMP was announced in 2025 and is expected to cost $54 million over six years.
