Hogue named Arkansas’ new state fire marshal 

Longtime investigator John Hogue has been appointed the next state fire marshal, the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management announced Monday. 

Hogue is a certified investigator of fire and explosions, and a licensed private investigator, according to a press release from the agency. Hogue, who has 32 years of experience in fire, explosion and hazardous materials investigations, is “uniquely qualified” to lead the state’s fire prevention and investigative efforts, the release said.

“John’s depth of experience and proven leadership in complex fire and explosive investigations make him an outstanding choice for State Fire Marshal,” ADEM Director A.J. Gary said. “His commitment to public safety, professionalism, and interagency coordination reflects exactly what this role requires to best serve Arkansans.”

Hogue has conducted more than 1,500 fire and explosive investigations across the country, according to the release. Additionally, he’s taught courses for the Arkansas Fire Academy and local emergency medical technician associations, and holds multiple nationally recognized certifications.

Hogue will begin transitioning into his new role immediately “to ensure continuity of statewide fire prevention, investigation, and public safety operations,” according to the release. 

The State Fire Marshal’s office is responsible for enforcing, periodically revising and updating the Arkansas Fire Prevention Code, according to its website. 

The office also conducts inspections of state buildings, licenses companies and individuals involved with the fireworks industry, and issues permits for above ground storage tanks used for combustible, flammable and hazardous substances.  

Hogue succeeds Dennis Free who retired July 1. Hogue assumed the role of Acting State Fire Marshal while the state conducted a statewide search for a permanent successor, according to a press release.
