Former Democratic congressional whip backs Brink in 7th District race
David Bonior, a 13-term Michigan congressman and a former Democratic Party whip, is backing former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink in her bid for the state’s 7th Congressional District seat.
Brink’s campaign announced Bonior’s endorsement on Wednesday. He served Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 2003, and was known as a champion for working families, the labor community and a fairer economy. Bonior also served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1973 to 1977.
“With all that’s at stake for Michigan families, Bridget Brink is the leader we need now more than ever,” Bonior said in a statement. “As our Ambassador in Ukraine, Bridget proved that no matter the personal stakes, she’ll stand up for what’s right, hold the powerful accountable, and get things done. The chaos in Washington is costing Michigan and Bridget will deliver real solutions to make life more affordable for working families.”
Brink thanked the former congressman for his support, calling him “a Michigan legend who has dedicated his life to fighting for Michigan families.”
Michigan State University professor Josh Cowen, former Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam, Alexandra Prieditis, Muhammad Salman Rais and Elyon Badger are also candidates in the August 2026 Democratic primary.
The eventual winner in that race would go on to face current U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett (R-Charlotte).
