Elon University Poll director Jason Husser discusses the 2026 NC Political Landscape report
If you pay any attention to politics and elections you know that the coming weeks will feature an avalanche of so-called horse race polls that test and report on the strength of various candidates as we head toward the fall midterm election. At such a time it becomes easy to think of North Carolinians as being sharply divided into two political camps based on their partisan affiliation or candidates of choice.
However the director of the Elon University Poll, Jason Husser, said the truth is that most North Carolinians don’t fall neatly into opposing camps that disagree on most or all issues. Indeed, as he discovered in his new poll – the 2026 North Carolina Political Landscape report – the truth is much more nuanced, and there are a host of important issues and ways of self-identifying in which we North Carolinians have in a lot – maybe even surprising amounts — in common.
