Democrat Zack Mullock ousts Rep. Jeff Van Drew in shocker
Cape May City Mayor Zack Mullock (D) will take GOP Rep. Jeff Van Drew’s seat in Congress, riding a wave of anti-Trump sentiment to win his first term in Congress after the incumbent conceded Tuesday night.
“He is and will be our new congressman for the next two years, and I wish him the very best,” Van Drew said during a concession speech Tuesday night. “I wish him success. His success is our success.”
The upset victory will allow Democrats to reclaim the 2nd District House seat, which they lost when Van Drew defected to the Republican Party six years ago
Van Drew, a former state lawmaker, won election to the House as a Democrat in 2018 but flipped to the GOP when he said the Democratic Party had drifted too far left.
