Moss wins election to Congress, takes seat currently held by Haley Stevens
Michigan state Sen. Jeremy Moss (D-Bloomfield) emerged victorious against Troy Mayor Ethan Baker, receiving 59.6% of the vote, according to unofficial results shared by the Associated Press at 9:33 p.m.
Moss, the state’s first openly gay state senator, will be Michigan’s first openly LGBTQ+ representative in Congress. He succeeds U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Birmingham), who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate and then stunned Democrats when she endorsed Republican Mike Rogers just days before the election.
In a statement celebrating his victory, Moss said Michiganders need a Congress that can put a check on the president.
“I will work hard every day to lower costs, protect and expand our healthcare, dismantle ICE, and hold the Trump administration accountable,” Moss said.
Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel, who served with Moss in the Michigan Senate, said he had seen “firsthand how he fights for his constituents and overcomes obstacles to get things done for the people he represents. Jeremy will take his resilience and legislative experience to continue serving Michiganders in the halls of Congress by lowering costs, protecting our freedoms, and holding the Trump administration accountable.”
