Beshear asks McConnell to update Kentuckians about his health after June hospitalization
Kentucky Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear is asking Republican U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell to provide an update on his health.
McConnell, 84, was hospitalized 24 days ago on June 14 for a reason not disclosed by his staffers. Since then, speculation on his health has spread, especially as right-wing influencer Laura Loomer who has a history of spreading conspiracy theories posted on X that a White House source told her the longtime senator was “brain dead.”
McConnell allies, including Kentuckian and CNN commentator Scott Jennings, said on social media on Tuesday that they had 20-minute conversations with the senator.
Beshear’s office said in a Wednesday morning press release the governor sent a letter to McConnell’s office “requesting an update on his health and well-being amid growing concerns around the Senator’s ability to serve.”
“Over the last several weeks, Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the health and well-being of Sen. McConnell. As Governor – and a fellow public official who understands the commitment we’ve made to the people we serve – I am requesting the Senator provide an update on his current health status,” Beshear said in a statement. “Allowing speculation to continue in the media is not fair to the Senator or to Kentuckians, and my hope is that this provides him the opportunity to share the information in a transparent manner, direct from the source. I wish him a safe and speedy recovery.”
Beshear wrote in the letter, dated Wednesday, he requested McConnell “fully update Kentuckians regarding the current status of your health.”
“As public officeholders, we have made a commitment to our constituents to do our best to represent them and to always be transparent,” Beshear wrote. “I believe this requires clear communication about one’s ability to serve.”
Since McConnell’s initial hospitalization, spokespeople for him have given a few vague updates on his condition. Last week, his office said he “continues to improve” and was appreciative of “the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital.”
Another prominent Kentucky Democrat, Charles Booker, a former state representative who is the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, said last Thursday Kentuckians “deserve a clear and honest answer about their senator’s condition.”
McConnell is not seeking reelection. Booker and Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Barr are seeking to succeed McConnell in office this fall.
