Auburn University approves tuition increases for 2027

The Auburn University Board of Trustees Friday voted to increase tuition for all students in the university system.

Starting in the 2027 fall semester, Auburn University’s tuition will go up $271, or 2% for in-state students, and $1,879, or 5%, for out-of-state students. With the increases, yearly tuition at the school will go from $13,572 to $13,843 for Alabama residents and from $37,596 to $39,475 for out-of-state students.

Auburn University at Montgomery will also have a tuition increase of $350, or 3%, for in-state students and $732, also 3%. The increase will bring  AUM tuition from $11,666 to $12,015 for Alabama residents and from $24,406 to $25,138 for out-of-state students.

Kelli Shomaker, the senior vice president for business and administration and the chief financial officer for Auburn, said during Friday’s meeting that the system continues “to incur cost increases due to rising inflation and labor pressures associated with retaining exceptional faculty and staff and providing an exceptional student experience.”

In 2024, the Board of Trustees voted to raise tuition by 3%, citing inflation, impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and labor pressures. The board voted last year to raise tuition again by 2% for in-state students and 4.5% for out-of-state students to “meet rising inflation and operational costs.”

The Auburn University System received $440.6 million in the fiscal year 2027 Education Trust Fund budget signed by Gov. Kay Ivey in April an increase of $26.4 million from the FY26 ETF budget.

Of the $440.6 million, $309.5 million was appropriated for Auburn University and $36.6 million was appropriated for AUM.

The University of Alabama’s tuition for the 2026-27 academic year is $12,718 for Alabama residents and $36,724 for non-residents. In 2025, the UA Board of Trustees approved system-wide tuition increases by up to 3% and voted to increase tuition costs by up to 4% earlier this year.

The UA System received $810.1 million from the Legislature in the FY27 ETF, up 45.4 million from the FY26 budget. Of that money, UA received $284.8 million, an increase of $18.6 million from FY26; University of Alabama at Birmingham received $439.3 million, up $22.4 million from last year and University of Alabama in Huntsville got $81.7 million, an increase of $4.4 million from FY26.
