A Vermont state senator from Rutland County has been jailed on a charge of domestic assault, according to Vermont State Police.
Terry Williams, 74, of Poultney, is set to appear Wednesday at 12:30 in court for an arraignment on the misdemeanor charge. Williams, a Republican, has served as a state senator since 2022 and is facing re-election on Tuesday.
Williams was arrested after state police received a report around 5:40 p.m. Tuesday that a domestic assault had taken place in Poultney, according to a state police press release issued Wednesday morning.
An investigation revealed that Williams “had caused pain and injury to a household member one day earlier” on Monday, the release added.
Williams was placed in custody and taken to the Rutland state police barracks for processing, according to the release. He was then taken to the Rutland jail on $500 bail.
