A worker was killed Thursday in an incident at a Kanawha County mine, West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey said in a news release.

Travis Price, 44, died at the American Eagle Mine, Morrisey said. The news release does not include details about the circumstances that led to Price’s death.

The release says the governor and his wife Denise are “heartbroken” about Price’s loss.

“Travis dedicated 24 years of his life to an industry that has helped build West Virginia and power our nation,” Morrisey said in the statement. “Every day, our coal miners take on difficult and dangerous work to provide for their families and communities. Their dedication and sacrifice deserve our deepest respect and gratitude.”

The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, Morrisey said.

“We ask all West Virginians to join Denise and me in praying for Travis’s loved ones and the entire mining community during this difficult time,” Morrisey said.
