South Lyon City Council votes to cover cameras, end contract with Flock

After instructing city officials to examine the legal implications of ending their contract for a pair of automated license plate reader cameras, members of the South Lyon City Council on Monday moved to terminate their relationship with Flock Safety.

City Council members voted 5-2 in support of a resolution to notify Flock that the city would not be renewing its contract. The resolution also requires the South Lyon Police Department to discontinue accessing, searching, or otherwise using data obtained through cameras, and to stop sharing data or providing access to any outside agency or third party, except as required by law. 

The motion also directs the South Lyon Police Department to cover the two cameras, located along 10 Mile Road. At 11:45, the department shared a post to Facebook noting the cameras had been covered and were no longer capturing data. 

The city council agreed to have the cameras installed in November 2025. After residents voiced data privacy and Fourth Amendment concerns, city council opted to reconsider the contract.
