Grizzly bear euthanized near Augusta

A grizzly bear was killed last week by wildlife management officials near Augusta, following several cases of livestock depredation and an attack on an archery hunter.

It is not known if the bear was the same one involved in the human attack, but a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks press release stated that the bear was feeding on a cow carcass just three miles from the attack last Monday.

The attack was determined to be a surprise defensive encounter, and the hunter sustained significant, but not life-threatening injuries.

The grizzly was an adult female without cubs, and was determined to have killed three cattle in the area.

Montana FWP, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services made the joint decision to kill the bear.
