Bear attacks woman near Columbia Falls

A bear attacked a woman walking her dog on a popular trail in the Flathead Valley on Monday evening, according to a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks press release.

The department and the U.S. Forest Service are investigating the attack, which took place on the Cedar Flats trail complex north of Columbia Falls.

The incident occurred around 7 p.m. Monday, and the woman sustained “significant injuries” and was transported to Logan Health Medical Center in Kalispell for treatment.

Wildlife officials are unsure what species of bear was involved in the attack and were unable to locate the animal Monday night while using a thermal infrared drone. The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office helped with the search.

The Cedar Flats trail complex remains closed in the interest of public safety while the incident is under investigation.

No further details about the extent of the search for the animal or the condition of the victim were immediately available.

Montana FWP reminds everyone that Montana is bear country, and during the fall bears are likely to be feeding in preparation for the winter and may be more likely in areas frequented by people.

When recreating in bear habitat, follow these safety tips:

• Carry bear spray where it’s easily accessible and know how to use it.

• Stay alert and watch for signs of bear activity, especially in areas with limited visibility.

• Travel in groups and keep members close together.

• Make noise to avoid surprising a bear, especially in dense vegetation or near running water.

• Avoid traveling at night, dawn or dusk.

• Steer clear of carcass sites or areas with scavenger activity.
