Elizabeth Warren backs McMorrow in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race

Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, has secured the endorsement of U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, adding to a growing list of high-profile backers in what has become a highly competitive primary race.

Warren, a prominent progressive voice known for advocating against corporate influence in politics, said she has supported McMorrow since the Michigan lawmaker flipped a Republican-held seat in 2018.

“I was immediately inspired by her ideas, her plans, and her fight to make a real difference,” Warren said in a statement. “Mallory is both a fighter and a winner, and I’m proud to endorse her because she’s the proven leader Michigan needs in the United States Senate.”

McMorrow welcomed the endorsement, framing it as validation of her campaign’s grassroots support.

“You don’t win alone — you build something bigger than yourself,” McMorrow said. “That’s what this campaign is about, and her endorsement is a reflection of every volunteer, donor, and neighbor who has powered this movement from day one.”

Warren’s backing threatens to exasperate ideological differences within the Democratic primary, which is set for August 4. McMorrow does not support “Medicare for All,” a policy championed not only by Warren, but by numerous other progressives, most notably her primary rival Abdul El-Sayed. 

With Warren’s support, McMorrow has now been endorsed by four sitting U.S. senators, including Chris Murphy of Connecticut, Martin Heinrich of New Mexico and Peter Welch of Vermont. Her campaign says that total surpasses any other candidate in the race, which also includes U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Birmingham) on the Democratic side, as well as former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-White Lake), who is endorsed by President Donald Trump and the leading GOP candidate.

McMorrow has also highlighted her fundraising strength, saying she has raised more money from small-dollar donors than her opponents combined, underscoring her campaign’s emphasis on grassroots support.
