Oakland County says it has found Legionella in two additional buildings

After officials detected Legionella bacteria in the water system for the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office last month, the county said Wednesday that two additional buildings’ water systems had the presence of the bacterium.

The county said in a news release that routine testing after the first sample was detected in the sheriff’s office led to Legionella being identified in the water systems of North Oakland Health Center and the Resource and Crisis Center.

“There are no known cases of Legionnaires’ disease associated with either facility and the risk to employees and the public remains low,” the county said.

Heavy-duty water filters are being installed on all fixtures in those buildings and the county has begun flushing the buildings’ water systems. The incoming water supply for both buildings has tested negative for the bacteria. Other measures, like water temperature monitoring, are also in place, as the bacteria flourishes in warm temperature water.

Routine testing is taking place at the Oakland County Jail, as well, the county said.

The issue at the sheriff’s office, which was reported in early December 2025, caused the building to be temporarily closed while testing and remediation work commenced. A custodian at the building was diagnosed with Legionnaire’s Disease, prompting the investigation, monitoring and remediation, MLive reported.
