Woody Jenkins, a longtime GOP activist and former state legislator, has resigned from his position at the Louisiana Treasury, citing his desire to focus on the newspaper he owns covering the new city of St. George.

Jenkins had served as Treasurer John Fleming’s director of government affairs since Fleming took office in January. He also was a key adviser to Fleming in his transition after being elected to the office last year.

Jenkins is the longtime owner and publisher of Central City News, a monthly newspaper and online publication covering the conservative enclave of Central in East Baton Rouge parish.

With the creation of St. George, another conservative area of East Baton Rouge, Jenkins said he saw an opportunity to launch the city’s first newspaper, the St. George Leader.

“I never saw it as a career but as a way to help Dr. Fleming get started in his new role as Treasurer,” Jenkins said in a statement to the Illuminator. “As much as I enjoy the important work at Treasury, it is impossible to continue my duties at the Treasury and devote the time and attention that the people of St. George deserve for their newspaper.”

In a statement, Treasury spokesman Jeff Crouere attributed much of the office’s success to Jenkins.

“We wish him well as his newspapers expand to meet a growing demand and we look forward to collaborating with him in the future,” Crouere added.
