U.S. Rep.-elect Lauren Boebert says she will object to Electoral College results

Rep.-elect Lauren Boebert announced that she intends to object to the results of the Electoral College after she is sworn in as a member of Congress.

“Guided by the US Constitution and my responsibility to my constituents, I will object to the Electoral College results on January 6th,” Boebert wrote on Twitter Thursday.

The new Congress, including Boebert, will be seated Jan. 3, and on Jan. 6 the House and Senate are scheduled to meet in a joint session to count votes from the Electoral College. Electors in the various states cast their votes, based on results from the Nov. 3 general election, on Dec. 14, making Joe Biden the winner of the presidential race. President Trump and many of his supporters have protested that his loss was due to election fraud, though no evidence of widespread fraud has been produced.

If at least one member of the House and one member of the Senate objects to Electoral College votes, the objection is considered and voted on in each chamber separately. The objection is upheld only if both the House and Senate vote in favor of it.

Several House members, led by Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Alabama, have said they will object. Sen.-elect Tommy Tuberville, also a Republican from Alabama, reportedly is considering objecting in the Senate.

A central component of Boebert’s campaign as she ran to represent Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District was support for Trump, and since the election she has regularly asserted that Trump should press his case that his loss was due to fraud.

“I believe that President Trump needs to keep fighting,” Boebert told Maria Bartiromo on Fox News on Dec. 4. “We have so much evidence to prove that this election was not right and that Joe Biden is not more popular than Hillary Clinton, he is not more popular than Barack Obama, and he did not receive more than 80 million votes here in the United States.”

On Thursday morning she tweeted, “I am very tired of hearing about fixing election fraud going forward. An election just happened. There was fraud. Fix that one first!”
