The University of Alabama system is offering an expedited transfer process to Birmingham-Southern College students after the liberal arts college announced their planned closure on Tuesday.

“The University of Alabama System is fully committed to supporting Birmingham-Southern students in this time of transition and ensuring they have the opportunity to remain in-state and receive an excellent educational experience,” the system wrote in a post on the University of Alabama Birmingham social media Wednesday.

Current BSC students will be able to apply with waived application fees and expedited review and credit transfer processing, if they are eligible. The system said they will maximize credit transfers. Academic advisors and program personnel will work with students on applying credits based on needs.

Each institution will work with students on an individual basis for financial aid.

The system said that interested BSC students should apply as soon as possible, but deadlines will be adjusted for impacted students.

The system said that students should contact the following liaisons with any questions:

BSC’s Board of Trustees voted to close the school as of May 31 after legislative leaders told them lawmakers were unlikely to approve a $30 million loan for the school.
