West Virginians have through Tuesday, Oct. 13 to register to vote in November’s general election.

A person can register by mailing an application to their county clerk. The application is accessible online at the Secretary of State’s Office.

Applications must be postmarked by the end of the day on Tuesday, a spokesperson for Secretary of State Kris Warner said. For a complete list of county clerks’ offices and addresses, visit the county clerk directory at the West Virginia Secretary of State’s website.

People can also register online or check their registration status on the Secretary of State’s website, sos.wv.gov/govotewv.

Voters will decide on a constitutional amendment. If voters approve Amendment 1, the state’s constitution would be amended to include that “Only citizens of the United States who are citizens of this state shall be entitled to vote at all elections.”

West Virginia law already prohibits people who are not citizens from voting in elections, but proponents of Amendment 1 say it’s not enough. The constitution requires voters to be citizens of the state, but does not specify that they be U.S. citizens. Adding the amendment would prohibit future Legislatures from allowing noncitizens to vote with the passage of a bill, proponents say.

Opponents of the measure argue it’s unnecessary. The proposed amendment needs a simple majority of more than 50% of voters to pass.

West Virginia voters will also choose representatives for two seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and one in the U.S. Senate, as well as a host of seats in the West Virginia Senate and House of Delegates.

Early voting in the 2026 general election begins Wednesday, Oct. 21 and ends Saturday, Oct. 31. During early voting, people can vote at their county courthouse or other designated places in their community from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week and on the last two Saturdays before the election. A complete list of early voting locations is available online at the Secretary of State’s website.

The general election is Nov. 3, 2026.
