Stitt, former Oklahoma governors to participate in public fireside chat

OKLAHOMA CITY — Gov. Kevin Stitt and four former Oklahoma governors will take part in a fireside chat next week to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Oklahoma Territorial Museum in Guthrie.

A local chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will sponsor the public event and fundraiser for the Territorial Museum that will include a discussion and question-and-answer session with Stitt and former governors Mary Fallin, Brad Henry, Frank Keating and George Nigh.

The event will center on a nonpolitical conversation in which the governors will talk about the history of Oklahoma’s executive branch and what historical figures have inspired them and guided their decision making during their time in elected office, said Territorial Museum Curator Michael Williams.

The event is symbolic because Oklahoma’s first governor was inaugurated at the Carnegie Library, which is attached to the Territorial Museum, he said.

Funds raised from the event will help the Oklahoma Historical Society update exhibits and other features at the Territorial Museum, Williams said.

The museum explores the Land Run of 1889, the formation of Oklahoma’s territorial government and the push to become the nation’s 46th state. The museum will mark its 50th anniversary on Statehood Day in November.

“We’re working toward redoing the museum for the next 50 years,” Williams said.

The event is set for 10 a.m. Oct. 5 at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center in Guthrie. Tickets can be purchased online for $20 per person. The center’s auditorium seats about 3,000 guests, Williams said.
