Rep. McClain seeks GOP caucus post

Freshman U.S.Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Bruce Twp.) has reached out to her GOP colleagues asking for their support in the race for conference secretary, according to a letter obtained by Politico.

She told colleagues on Friday she has support from the majority of the caucus, Politico reported. Reps. Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.) and  Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) also are running.

Democrats currently lead the U.S. House. News outlets have projected on Monday that Republicans will narrowly control the chamber next year — a letdown from predictions of a large “red wave” — but some key races have yet to be called. Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was expected to be speaker if Republicans won Tuesday, but the powerful House Freedom Caucus could stand in his way.

A McClain spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment from the Advance.

McClain has been a key ally of former President Donald Trump and was one of three Michigan Republicans who did not vote to certify President Joe Biden’s win in key states. McClain spoke at both of Trump’s Macomb County rallies this year.

In 2021, McClain joined a handful of Republicans in co-sponsoring a concurrent resolution condemning and censuring Biden for what she calls his “horrific lack of leadership” and “catastrophic failures in Afghanistan.”

On the other side of the aisle, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Ann Arbor) is vying for the Democratic caucus vice chair position.
