NC Republicans take the stage at the GOP midterm convention

Laurie Buckhout, the Republican candidate in North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, told the Republican midterm convention on Thursday that Republicans kept their promises to cut taxes for working families. 

Buckhout touted the tax deductions on tips and overtime included in the omnibus tax cut and spending package Congress passed last year. 

Democrats’ opposition to the law, called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, was one of the common themes in the second day of the Republican National Committee convention. 

Buckhout lost narrowly to U.S. Rep. Don Davis, the incumbent Democrat, two years ago. 

Republicans in the N.C. legislature redrew the district last year to favor a Republican candidate.

“Republicans keep their promises,” she said. “We said we would cut taxes for working families, we did it. Waitresses keep their tips. The nurse pulling a double shift keeps her overtime pay. Small businesses get room to grow.”

All Democrats in Congress voted against the bill, including Davis. Buckhout referred to him as “do-nothing Don Davis.”

Some of Democrats’ objections to the law are its deep cuts to safety net programs including Medicaid and food assistance. The law offers significant tax cuts for wealthy people and corporations.   

While some Republican candidates from around the country who are in close races did not attend the convention in Dallas amid President Donald Trump’s slumping approval ratings, high gas prices, and an unpopular war with Iran, North Carolina Republicans in tougher battles made the trip. 

Michael Whatley, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, addressed the convention Wednesday. Whatley, a former Republican National Committee chairman, has been shown in polls to be trailing Democrat Roy Cooper, a former state attorney general and two-term governor. 

Whatley touts Trump’s endorsement. 

U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, who represents North Carolina’s 9th district and is chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, also addressed the convention Thursday,
