U.S. Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Bruce Twp.) is running to be Republican House conference chair after current chair, New York U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, was tapped by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

The conference chair position is the fourth high-ranking position for U.S. House Republicans, who are currently in the majority. It is unclear which party will control the U.S. House next term, as results in several races are still outstanding.

McClain announced her interest in running for the position Monday with Indiana U.S. Rep. Erin Houchin and Florida U.S. Rep. Kat Cammack throwing their hats in the ring, as well.

McClain confirmed reports she was in the running on social media, saying, “Pres. Trump & I brought together a unified coalition of voters in Michigan that represents the modern Republican party. I’m running to be Conference Chair because this is the approach we need to retain and grow our Conference. I’m ready for the challenge!”

McClain spoke at several Trump campaign rallies around the state during the 2024 campaign.

Michigan Republican Party Chair Pete Hoekstra is backing McClain’s pursuit of the position, saying in a statement that McClain is a “fierce leader” who is up to the task of uniting Republicans to accomplish their goals.

“There is no representative better suited to fill the House GOP Conference Chair role and deliver the America First message to the nation than Congresswoman Lisa McClain. A lifelong Michigander, businesswoman, mother of four, and fiery public servant, Lisa has represented Michigan’s 9th Congressional District with pride and loyalty,” Hoekstra said. “On the heels of delivering the critical swing state of Michigan for President Trump, Lisa is the freedom fighter and MAGA voice the House GOP needs. Lisa tore through the Blue Wall, and as Conference Chair, she’ll tear through liberal agendas to deliver results for America.”
