The United States will celebrate Memorial Day on Monday, May 25, honoring U.S. military personnel who died serving the country.

The annual holiday, originally known as Decoration Day, was first celebrated on May 30, 1868 to honor fallen Civil War soldiers and eventually, all soldiers who died during service after World War I. Memorial Day was not recognized as a national holiday by the U.S. government until 1971, when Congress passed legislation declaring that the holiday would take place on the last Monday in May.
