The Las Cruces Public Schools Equity Council has two vacant seats, and is currently seeking candidates for the volunteer positions.

One seat is reserved for a parent with children in elementary schools, the other is an open seat for any Las Cruces community member.

The position requires two to six hours per month of council and committee meetings. Councilors have staggered terms of two or three years.

Las Cruces schools  established the equity council in 2019, after the conclusion of the lawsuit Martinez/Yazzie v. the State of New Mexico.

The New Mexico Public Education Department directed school districts across the state to develop councils to address the failure of New Mexico schools to meet educational needs of students.

Specifically these are students that are Native American, living with disabilities, students with fewer financial resources and those learning English.

The deadline to apply is Sunday, Sept. 17. Applicants can apply here in English and here in Spanish.
