A member of the Louisiana Public Service Commission and a state lawmaker could become candidates for state insurance commissioner after the incumbent said this week he will not seek re-election.

According to our partners at WVUE-TV Fox 8 News, PSC District 1 Commissioner Eric Skrmetta, a Republican from Metairie, and Rep. Edmond Jordan, D-Baton Rouge, will consider entering the race.

“I know that my experience can be applied well to holding insurers accountable,” Skrmetta said in a statement to Fox 8. “I will consider my options as the fall elections near, and the duties of Commissioner of Insurance and other options do interest me.”

Jordan, who is vice chairman of the House Insurance Committee, told Fox 8 he has heard from people urging him to run.

The field for insurance commissioner is expected to grow after 17-year officeholder Jim Donelon announced Tuesday he would not enter the race. Tim Temple, an insurance executive from Baton Rouge who unsuccessfully challenged Donelon in 2019, has already announced he will run again.
