Alabama’s appointed electors signed the necessary paperwork Tuesday casting the state’s nine electoral votes for President-elect Donald Trump and Vice-President-elect J.D. Vance after the two were declared the winner of the November general election.

Gov. Kay Ivey, speaking prior to the event, thanked Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen and his staff “ for overseeing a fair, secure and transparent election.”

The Trump and Vance ticket won the presidential contest in Alabama by capturing more than 1.4 million votes. Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, her running mate, received about 770,000 of the total ballots cast.

Despite the victory, Trump did not significantly expand his base of voters in the state compared to what he received during the 2020 contest.

The state’s shift to the right was led by a marked decline in turnout of those who favored Democrats. The support for Harris declined by almost 82,000 votes compared to the total votes that President Joe Biden received when he was the candidate in 2020, a 9.6% difference.

Alabama continues to lag the rest of the nation in terms of voter turnout, with about 58.5% of registered voters in the state casting a ballot last month. That is the lowest turnout figure since 1988.
