Idaho’s refurbished Liberty Bell replica to be rededicated Nov. 23
Idaho’s newly refurbished replica of the Liberty Bell will be rededicated Nov. 23 during ceremonies at the Idaho State Capitol in Boise, Idaho State Historical Society Executive Director Janet Gallimore said Thursday.
In January, the bell was sent to the Bell Foundry Christoph in Charleston, S.C. for cleaning and refurbishing in connection with this year’s America250 celebrations in Idaho.
The refurbished Liberty Bell made it back to the Idaho State Capitol in July for the America250 celebration, and then was sent on a tour of cities and towns in all 44 Idaho counties so that school children and the public could see and ring the bell.
At the completion of the statewide tour, the Liberty Bell will return to Boise for a free, public rededication ceremony at noon on Nov. 23. During those ceremonies, the Liberty Bell will be reinstalled at its home on the front steps of the Idaho State Capitol.
During the America250 in Idaho Advisory Council’s meeting on Thursday, Idaho State Treasurer Julie Ellsworth floated the idea of installing a new liberty fountain in Idaho as a permanent landmark for this year’s America250 celebration.
Ellsworth, who said she has already had Zoom meetings with state legislators on the subject, estimated the liberty fountain would cost $1 million, and encouraged the state to fundraise to generate the money for the fountain.
“This is the gift that we want to give a lasting legacy to Idaho about America250,” Ellsworth said.
Ellsworth did not say where the liberty fountain might be built. The advisory council did not take any action on the liberty fountain Thursday, but members encouraged Ellsworth to see if all the different officials and stakeholders who would need to support the project are on board and then report back during the council’s next meeting, which is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 10.
