The Indiana Capital Chronicle and the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics will host a panel discussion on Tuesday’s Organization Day — a sort of orientation day for new legislators and the ceremonial start of the 2024 legislative session.

The Nov. 21 panel will include four experts on Indiana Statehouse politics to preview key issues ahead of the session, which will be the last helmed by outgoing Gov. Eric Holcomb, who is term limited.

While 2024 will be Holcomb’s last year, it promises to be an intense time for election politics with six Republicans vying to succeed his administration: U.S. Sen. Mike Braun, former Secretary of Commerce Brad Chambers, Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Fort Wayne businessman Eric Doden, former Attorney General Curtis Hill and Jamie Reitenour.

Panel experts include:

  • Niki Kelly, Editor-in-Chief of the Indiana Capital Chronicle
  • Greg Shufeldt, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Indianapolis
  • Brandon Smith, Statehouse Bureau Chief at Indiana Public Broadcasting
  • Laura Wilson, Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Indianapolis

Fox59 Anchor Dan Spehler, host of IN Focus: Indiana’s Week in Politics, will moderate the panel and quiz panelists on the upcoming session.

The Tuesday event will be held on the fourth floor of the Indiana Statehouse in the south atrium between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Breakfast, snacks and coffee will be provided.

Legislators convene on Jan. 8 for a short session.
