Grand Forks lawmaker arrested for DUI

A Grand Forks lawmaker was arrested for misdemeanor DUI early Tuesday morning.

About 1 a.m., Rep. Claire Cory, R-Grand Forks, was driving near the intersection of Gateway Drive and Columbia Road in Grand Forks when a local police officer pulled her over, according to the arrest citation.

A breath test showed Cory’s blood alcohol content was 0.168%, twice the legal limit for driving.

Her arraignment is scheduled for May 21 in Grand Forks Municipal Court.

If convicted, Cory could face up to 30 days in jail and/or up to a $1,500 fine, according to North Dakota law.

Cory declined to comment Wednesday. An attorney is not listed for her in court records.

She has represented District 42 in the North Dakota House since 2019. Cory is running for the district’s Senate seat and will face Republican Party-endorsed candidate Dustin McNally, a member of the University of North Dakota faculty, in the June 11 primary.

The district’s Senate seat has been held by Sen. Curt Kreun, R-Grand Forks, since 2017. Kreun decided not to seek reelection.
